Recognition Night

West Middle School is proud to host three nights in the spring for honoring our students’ achievements. The purpose of our annual awards nights is to recognize students who show outstanding academic growth and unusual commitment to their academics, often in spite of obstacles. Though the primary indicators of excellence may be based on academic achievement, teachers have the opportunity to recognize student performance that demonstrates citizenship, respect, equity, motivation, initiative, creativity, intellectual depth, leadership, and/or exceptional judgment. Exceptional students may not always be those with the highest overall grades; they may be the student leaders who have had an extraordinary year of growth.

 

In 2013, we will recognize and honor achievement in the following categories:

 

SUBJECT AWARDS

Teams of teachers determine the final awardees based on one or more of the following criteria:

 

· High overall grade and level of academic scholarship

· Demonstration of the C.A.R.E. motto (Citizenship, Achievement, Respect, Equity)

· class participation

· consistency of performance and depth of intellect

· range of improvement, aspired to high goals

· overcoming setbacks or obstacles to achievement

· devotion to learning as seen through motivation, initiative, and creativity

· sharing academic talent with others in cooperative learning environments including leadership and/or exceptional judgment

· behind the scenes treatment of other students to benefit their learning

 

SPECIAL AWARDS

Students who participated to expectations in co-curricular activities may also be nominated for an award. Special achievements in this category include:

 

· Student Council                National Junior Honor Society

· Math League / Math Counts / Math contest             Spelling Bee

· Scholastic Art Awards                   Destination Imagination

 

HONOR ROLL AWARDS

The following honor roll categories for cumulative GPA will be recognized:

 

· 6th grade students who have earned a 4.0 (all A grades)

· 6th grade students who have earned a 3.75 to 3.9 GPA

 

· 7th grade students who have earned a 4.0 (all A grades) in the current year only

· 7th grade students who have earned a 3.75 to 3.9 GPA in the current year only

· 7th grade students who have earned a 4.0 for 6th grade and 7th grade

 

· 8th grade students who have earned a 4.0 (all A grades) in the current year only

· 8th grade students who have earned a 3.75 to 3.9 GPA in the current year only

· 8th grade students who have earned a 4.0 (all A grades) all 3 years at West Middle School

 

The cut-off date for determining GPA awards will be the end of the third quarter. Students who earn

honor roll recognition in the fourth quarter will be recognized in the June issue of the school newsletter.
